Elephanta Island is a beautiful island located close to Mumbai, and is highly frequented by history lovers. The history behind this island is quite interesting. It was once when the Portuguese found a statue of elephant at the entrance of the caves, and thus they named it as the Caves of Elephant, which was later renamed to Elephanta Caves. The island containing these caves is thus named as Elephanta Island.

There is a lot to explore at the Elephanta Island, and thus Sketch India Journeys offers a same day tour to the islands which allows you to explore the mesmerizing beauty and historic importance of this place. The tour itinerary goes as follows:
Pick up from your hotel:

Early morning, our representative will pick you up from your hotel in a luxury car and we will drive towards the Elephanta Island. Once we reach the Gateway of India, we will take a ferry boat to reach the island. It will take less than an hour to reach the destination. There are quite a few rock-cut caves dedicated to Lord Shiva, displaying a supreme example of ancient Hindu architecture. There are a total of seven caves carved out of a basalt rock. The caves are believed to be created during 7th century.

Despite of the fact that the Elephanta Caves are one of the finest example of supreme architecture and the way they are carved is totally unbelievable; the caves were renovated in 1970s to make it a popular tourist hub. The Elephanta Island, which is the biggest attraction of this place, was included amongst the UNESCO World Heritage Sites in 1987 due to its magnificent historical importance. Most important thing to see here are dozens of temples dedicated to different Hindu gods. But more important is exploring the majestic architecture that these temples wear, because constructing such temples, even in today with highly advanced machines, is next to impossible
